At Anglicare Southern Queensland, we respect individuality at all our Residential facilities, and encourage independence in all our residents, while also providing qualified and caring staff to deliver safe and professional support that fosters a loving community.
St John’s is a home in Toowong, reserved for elderly men. The facility caters for men with dementia, and special care groups such as homeless men and those with mental health or complex health issues. To continue with these services, our qualified and caring Anglicare staff are looking for volunteer Activities Assistants to help with various activities and group programs.
Along with setting up and packing down activities, you will be required to offer reassurance, praise and support along the way – joining in is encouraged! You may also be required to assist with client outings. To join us, you will need:
- An interest in various activities and hobbies, which may include Arts & Crafts, sewing, bingo or other games
- Previous experience working with those who live with Dementia or mental health issues would be beneficial
- The motivation to make a difference in other people’s lives
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to relate to different ages and cultures
- A patient, friendly and mature attitude and a respect for confidentiality and privacy
- Flexibility, commitment and ability to work both independently and within a team
- Respect, care and courtesy towards others
Other requirements include:
- Availability – at least one shift per week, 10.00am - 11.00am or 1.30pm -3..00pm Monday to Friday
- Consistency and reliability – willing to commit to an ongoing basis for at least 6 months
- Confidentiality – this is critical to us and you will need to sign a Role Description which includes a confidentiality agreement
- Two (2) referees – who are not relatives and can vouch for your character and interaction in the community (ie. Work Colleague, Church Elder, Community Leader , Doctor or other Professional)
- National Police Clearance – we organise and pay for this if you don’t already have one
